Billy Ray Bracken

My parents have a long history of animals in their life. The list is extensive…dogs, cats, horses, geese, rabbits — and one very special goat. It takes a truly unique creature to spark a war between four consenting adults. In “Goat Wars”, a story previously published on a past incarnation of this blog, you’ll meet Billy Ray Bracken, a typical capra aegagrus hircus whose over-friendliness nearly caused blood to be shed. I’ve never seen anyone agitate my mom like Billy’s arch-enemy, our neighbor Susan, did.

A story in nine parts:

  • Part 1: the one time in my life where Vietnam — a war that ended right when when I was born — came back to haunt me
  • Part 2: the circle of life brings us a new goat, complete with new issues
  • Part 3: the saga reaches the first of its many boiling points, as the law becomes involved
  • Part 4: justice is served
  • Parts 5 through 9: to be published soon
