Rob
Like myself, Rob is a former resident assistant at Bruce Hall. Unlike myself, he was hired after the semester began, which meant that his residents spent their first weeks without a RA. They didn’t cause any serious trouble, thanks to our sneaky ruse making them believe authority was indeed present.
Before opening the building that semester, we decorated Rob’s future wing just like all the others at Bruce Hall. This included adding name tags to all the doors, decorations around the hallway, a list of dorm rules at the wing entrance, and so forth. Then each night, a different staff member would camp out in the empty RA room, generating noise and presence that fooled the residents. Our crowning touch was putting a nameplate on the RA room door which read “Casper” — as we didn’t yet know the name of the RA we were going to hire. When Rob finally arrived, everyone called him “Casper”, and the nickname stuck.
Rob and I quickly became friends, partially due to the proximity of our wings, but largely due to common interests such as soccer and history. Over the handful of semesters we worked together, the title of “Impaler” — which went to the resident assistant that wrote the most citations to residents breaking the rules — bounced back and forth between the two of us like Lakers/Celtics.
These days, one can find Rob in one of two places: on terra firma, working for the city of Denton; or up above, buzzing around in a plane and working on his pilot’s license.
