Book of Spam
Preface
My website began in 2003 with a simple purpose — to tell stories. It wasn’t meant to be your typical blog full of angsty thoughts, what’s currently playing on my computer, and über-sexed MySpace pics. Instead, I wanted to be different and create tales that would captivate complete strangers. Along the way, I lost some of that direction, and as a result things became more “bloggy†and less epic. Since it’s all about stories (which in turn are all about me), I rewrote this website from the ground up to better present these chronicles.
How you choose to digest them is your call, as I present not one, but two separate reading experiences. The best place to start is the Stories page. It contains brief introductions into each published tale, and from there you can choose to read a particular part or the whole enchilada. Some stories will start off small, but may grow into epics of Greek proportions. Since stories wouldn’t be worth a hill of beans without their people and places, you’ll find special focus on the characters and locations which made the depicted events special enough to be told.
Like molecules, stories sometimes bind to form chains of larger, stronger yarns. For novelists, librarians, adults with long attention spans, insomniacs, and people truly interested in me, there is also this The Book of Spam you are currently reading (and hopefully continuing). It is an online book, presenting every one of my stories in chronological order. Each chapter equates to a year of my life, and as I grow older and tell more tales, the book will expand in length and swell in content. In addition, it will contain flotsam and jetsam not found in the more-episodic stories. So even if you read every one of the individual stories, you will want to check out this book also.
You, the reader, are in control. You can choose to read an individual story, check out one of its parts, or read end-to-end an entire book which shows how one story led to another. It’s a revolutionary way to present an online book, and I hope you enjoy the experience of watching the chapters fill with amazing places, interesting people, and silly thoughts. It’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel — except different.
For those of you that are new to potted meat, I recommend checking out the About Spamboy page. There you’ll get an introduction to my interests, some glimpse into my past, and a taste of what laypeople call “the presentâ€.
Thanks for being patient while I was busy, and I hope you enjoy visiting the site as much I did while designing it. Check back soon for more parts, more chapters, and an introduction written by “Big Daddy” Jim himself.
